How many Members? LAWIM supporters now number 1,100 and are comprised of Professional members, Associate members, Patrons, and friends.

Mission Statement:

Established in 1986, Los Angeles Women in Music (LAWIM) is a nonprofit 501 (c) 3 Public Benefit Corporation dedicated to fostering equal opportunity for women and men in the music industry and to promoting the advancement of women through empowerment, support, education, encouragement and recognition of their achievements. The goals and activities of Los Angeles Women in Music are founded on the belief that women and men working together in mutual respect, sharing abilities and expertise, will strengthen the music business and the music that is at its heart. At the same time, we recognize the unique and valuable contributions of women and advocate a musical world where these contributions are acknowledged and talents are nurtured.

As such, we provide forums and opportunities for emerging talents; pay tribute to women who have made distinctive and/or significant contributions to our musical culture; recognize those (individuals/organizations/entities) who have contributed to the betterment of women in music; provide educational programs and events at large; and give rise to social and civic issues in our local community through musical endeavors.

Why was your organization launched?

To promote the equal opportunity and parity of women in the music industry.

What are the organization’s goals for this year?

1. To recognize women whose career achievements act to encourage all women in music.

2.To promote performance opportunities for all emerging artists

3. To present music-based programs, education and issues to the music community or to the benefit of the general community.

Programs/Initiatives to achieve those goals & status

1. Annual Award Honors Event, launched with great success last year. Honors career achievement, corporate/organizational music-related recognition, emerging artist recognition.

2. Monthly “Soiree:” Singer/songwriter/performance showcase for indie, unsigned artists.

3. Annual singer/songwriter competition, co-sponsored with "G.I.N.A. For Missing Persons," using music to raise awareness and funds for locating and recovering missing children and adults.

4. Sponsoring “Project Beautiful,” a compilation CD and Concert series to raise awareness and funds for Women's Abuse Crisis Shelters throughout Southern California.

Major Events:

A) LAWIM Honors Banquet: Annual major fundraiser, staged at Ballroom type venue. This event features a produced show presentation of three major awards:
 
1) Individual Career Achievement (Last year’s Honoree, Harriet Schock).
2) Institutional Award (last year’s Honoree, KOST 103.5 FM Radio).
3) The Comet Award for emerging artists. (Last year’s Honoree, Kelly Fitzgerald).

B) GINA/LAWIM annual Singer/Songwriter Competition now in its 5th year.

C) December Holiday Bazaar – Fundraiser and Music Seminars

Additional important information:

Los Angeles WoMen in Music is looking forward to the support of a re-activated Advisory Board, under the direction of our past president Leanne Summers, a very accomplished vocal coach and performer. Joining this Advisory Board are Iris Gordy, formerly Vice President of Motown, and Judi Pulver, whose background is in entertainment trade media.
