The Normal Heart By Larry Kramer Directed by George C. Wolfe By special arrangement with Daryl Roth In the Kreeger Theater June 8-July 29, 2012
The story of a city in denial, The Normal Heart unfolds like a real-life political thrilleras a tight-knit group of friends refuses to let doctors, politicians and the press bury the truth of an unspoken epidemic behind a wall of silence. A quarter-century after it was written, this outrageous, unflinching, and totally unforgettable look at the sexual politics of New York during the AIDS crisis remains one of the theatres most powerful evenings ever. Arena Stage is proud to launch the national tour of this important and exhilarating work of theater, winner of three Tony Awards including Best Revival of a Play.

Kay Larson: John Cage, Zen Buddhism, and the Inner Life of Artists

Berkeley, CA -
John Cage, one of the greatest American composers of the twentieth century, created a new music that defies simple explanation. Many writers have grappled with that music - in which Cage used notes chosen by chance, randomly tuned radios, and even pure silence - trying to understand what it means rather than where it comes from. Where the Heart Beats reveals in an unprecedented way exactly what empowered Cage to compose his unique music, and how he inspired so many of the tremendous artistic transformations of mid-century America.
Kay Larsons biography of John Cage is the first to address the phenomenal importance of Zen Buddhism to the composers life, and to the artistic avant-garde of the 1950s and 1960s. Zens power of transforming Cages troubled mind, by showing him his own enlightened nature (also the nature of all living things) liberated Cage from an acute personal crisis that threatened his life, his music, and his relationship with his life partner.

Palo Alto, CA -
Innovation is a key driver of economic growth for companies, for countries, for regions. Each year, numerous reports are issued on the most innovative companies, countries, & individuals. When it comes to those individual innovators- what names usually appear? Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, Dean Kamen, Larry Page , Sergey Brin and Thomas Edison. Where are the women? Are women not innovative or are they somehow being overlooked?
This panel will look at the challenges and opportunities women encounter in being (and being recognized as) innovators. We'll explore the issues they face, their roles in innovation teams, and the strategies they've used to succeed.
COST: $10.00 for members; $25.00 for general public.
