It promises to be unlike any other theater experience offered to Bay Area audiences this summer.
The Ludlow strike and the subsequent massacre captured the attention of some of the 20th century's most influential thinkers, inspiring a novel by Upton Sinclair, theses by Howard Zinn and George McGovern, and a tragic lament by Woody Guthrie.

Maira Kalman: Various Illuminations (of a Crazy World)
This summer, the Contemporary Jewish Museum presents Maira Kalman: Various Illuminations (of a Crazy World), the first major museum survey of award-winning illustrator, author and designer Maira Kalmans work.
Perhaps best known for her witty covers and drawings for The New Yorker, families will recognize Kalmans work from the many beloved books for children she has written and illustrated over the years. A generation grew up reading the adventures of Max Stravinsky the Parisian dog poet in such well-known titles as Oooh-La-La (Max in Love), Max Makes a Million and Max in Hollywood, Baby. Her other titles include Stay Up Late, her first childrens book created in collaboration with the Talking Heads David Byrne, and an alphabet book called What Pete Ate from A to Z.

|
San Francisco, CA -
Literature comes alive when treated as a spectator Sport! That's Litquake motto and the driving force behind their collaboration with the American Conservatory Theater in this staged reading from acclaimed author Christopher Moore's bestselling novel Fool, his twisted and delirious revisit of Shakespeare's King Lear told from the perspective of the character Pocket the Fool. Helmed by A.C.T. director Mark Rucker, it will feature a cast of A.C.T. actors as well as the author himself as the narrator.
"Compared to Moore's novel, even Mel Brooks' hilariously tasteless film Blazing Saddles appears a model of stately 18th-century decorousness." - The Washington Post
COST: $25.00 at door; $22.50 in advance.

Girls For A Change (GFC) empowers young women in middle school and high school to create social change in their communities. We are looking for women volunteers to guide girls through the process of identifying an issue in their community and then designing a project that creates change around that issue. Coaching with GFC means working with girls for 12 weeks to tell them they are important and powerful and that they can create change. The commitment is about 15 hours per month and includes one meeting with girls per week. We have teams that start in the fall (August to December) and in the spring (January to May). We offer Coach Training, staff support and a coach manual to help guide you during the year. We provide the support you need to work effectively with girls in communities throughout the Silicon Valley. We are currently in high need of fall volunteers.
