Maira Kalman: Various Illuminations (of a Crazy World)
This summer, the Contemporary Jewish Museum presents Maira Kalman: Various Illuminations (of a Crazy World), the first major museum survey of award-winning illustrator, author and designer Maira Kalmans work.
Perhaps best known for her witty covers and drawings for The New Yorker, families will recognize Kalmans work from the many beloved books for children she has written and illustrated over the years. A generation grew up reading the adventures of Max Stravinsky the Parisian dog poet in such well-known titles as Oooh-La-La (Max in Love), Max Makes a Million and Max in Hollywood, Baby. Her other titles include Stay Up Late, her first childrens book created in collaboration with the Talking Heads David Byrne, and an alphabet book called What Pete Ate from A to Z.

The hysteria and humor of being human
Boldly using direct audience experience and participation, "New York, I Love You, I Hate You... Now Dance!" examines an artist's struggle between brilliance and imitation, inclusion and exclusion in the NY art world. "Dokuen" or 'solo' in Japanese, exhumes the myriad of emotions and reactions that reminds us of the levity and solemnity in life and death. Both dance theatre works follow characters oscillating between hilarity and hysteria.
Direction and choreography: Alicia Ohs Realization and Performance: Ay.Lin, Hana Erdman, Harold Burns and Jose Navarette Lighting Design: Stephanie Anne Johnson
COST: $20 no one turned away.

Thursday, July 15, 2010

Palo Alto, CA -
Dr. Tel-Oren will speak on body detoxification, a proactive ongoing process to decrease the impact of toxins on the biochemistry, the cellular function and the integrity of the body. Symptoms of toxic build-up include chronic headaches, pains, aches, fatigue, asthma, skin disorders, chronic infections, and many other conditions. We support the detoxification process with a clean diet focusing on organic fruits and vegetables and a small amount of seeds (nuts, seeds, gluten-free grains, and legumes) in order to obtain all the nutrients necessary for optimal detoxification over a long period of time. To detoxify the tissues, we want to consume hypoallergenic foods for at least 3 months.
COST: $10, free for first time guests.

San Jose, CA -
Girls For A Change (GFC) empowers young women in middle school and high school to create social change in their communities. We are looking for women volunteers to guide girls through the process of identifying an issue in their community and then designing a project that creates change around that issue. Coaching with GFC means working with girls for 12 weeks to tell them they are important and powerful and that they can create change. The commitment is about 15 hours per month and includes one meeting with girls per week. We have teams that start in the fall (August to December) and in the spring (January to May). We offer Coach Training, staff support and a coach manual to help guide you during the year. We provide the support you need to work effectively with girls in communities throughout the Silicon Valley. We are currently in high need of fall volunteers. For an application please go to http://girlsforachange.typepad.com/national/2007/04/volunteer_in_si.html
