Maira Kalman: Various Illuminations (of a Crazy World)
This summer, the Contemporary Jewish Museum presents Maira Kalman: Various Illuminations (of a Crazy World), the first major museum survey of award-winning illustrator, author and designer Maira Kalmans work.
Perhaps best known for her witty covers and drawings for The New Yorker, families will recognize Kalmans work from the many beloved books for children she has written and illustrated over the years. A generation grew up reading the adventures of Max Stravinsky the Parisian dog poet in such well-known titles as Oooh-La-La (Max in Love), Max Makes a Million and Max in Hollywood, Baby. Her other titles include Stay Up Late, her first childrens book created in collaboration with the Talking Heads David Byrne, and an alphabet book called What Pete Ate from A to Z.

Getting Unstuck - a Horse Powered Workshop
Sponsored by EquusEmbrace
- Click here to see any other events from this sponsor.
|
|
Saturday, July 10, 2010
|
|
Snohomish, WA -
Our fears can sometimes incapacitate us so we can barely make a decision about breakfast, much less about the rest of our lives. The way in which a horse connects with the emotions of a client can bypass conscious thought and illuminate where your "stickiness" lies, even if you aren't aware of it. With the issue thus clarified, change becomes less elusive and your pathway more clear.
At the "Getting Unstuck" Women's Workshop, you will learn from the powerful equine teacher about clarity, focus and intention. You'll get to test your own powers of awareness, concentration and intuition. And there will be one- on-one sessions that can help you to see yourself in an entirely new way.
COST: $250.

Hysteresis

- Click here to see any other events from this sponsor.
|
|
Saturday, July 10, 2010
|
|
New York, NY -
July 9 (9pm) and July 10 (8pm)
San Francisco dance company DOUBLE VISION presents the east coast premiere of Hysteresis. Free from traditional structures and narratives, Hysteresis evokes an abstract dreamscape rich in complex shapes, relationships and points of meditation. The audience is presented with unknown customs, languages, and symbols through movement, sound and the implementation of hysteretic systems. Fleeting patterns dissolve into autonomous polyrhythms and intersecting lines as five dancers slip through light - leaping, twisting, striking, and resisting rest.
Hysteresis features choreography by Pauline Jennings, music by Sean Clute, lighting design by Ben Coolik, costuming by Andrea Campbell.
COST: $15 advance, $20 at door [general]; $12 [student].
