Building a Vocal Community: Singing in the African American Tradition with Ysaye M. Barnwell

Sponsored by CIIS Public Programs & Performances - Click here to see any other events from this sponsor.

From: Saturday, March 31, 2012
To: Sunday, April 01, 2012

San Francisco, CA - Presented by CIIS Public Programs & Performances

There is an awesome power in the human voice. When uncommon voices are blended for the common good, they become a vocal community at its best. Masterfully led by Ysaye M. Barnwell, singers and non-singers alike share the common experience of learning in the oral tradition and singing rhythms, chants, traditional songs from Africa and the diaspora, and a variety of songs from African American culture. These include spirituals, ring shouts, hymns, gospels, and songs from the civil rights movement. The historical, social, and political context will provide an introduction to the songs.

Ysaye M. Barnwell, PhD, performed with the internationally renowned African American female quintet Sweet Honey In The Rock for more than twenty years. She has spent much of her time off stage working as a master teacher and choral clinician in African American cultural performance.

Ah, Wilderness! at Arena Stage

Sponsored by Arena Stage - Click here to see any other events from this sponsor.

From: Friday, March 09, 2012

Washington, DC - Ah, Wilderness!
Written by Eugene ONeill
Directed by Kyle Donnelly
In the Fichandler Stage
March 9-April 8, 2012
Part of the Eugene ONeill Festival

Return to an idyllic age of Americana in Eugene ONeills unabashedly romantic and sweetly funny Ah, Wilderness! As the Connecticut-based Miller clan plans their traditional Fourth of July festivities, their dreamy-eyed middle child Richard is wrestling with cultural conventions, political uncertainty, the power of literature and the exquisite pain of love. The memories of family life were never so delicately portrayed as in ONeills only comedy, his coming-of-age love letter to a simpler time that finds the master playwright at his most wistful and serene. (New York Times).

Long Day's Journey Into Night at Arena Stage

Sponsored by Arena Stage - Click here to see any other events from this sponsor.

From: Friday, March 30, 2012
To: Sunday, May 06, 2012

Washington, DC - Long Days Journey Into Night
Written by Eugene ONeill
Directed by Robin Phillips
In the Kreeger Theater
March 30-May 6, 2012
Part of the Eugene ONeill Festival

Delusion and disenchantment have pitted the Tyrone family members against one another for decades. One fateful day, as their increasingly drunken hours slip by, they must either confront their defeated dreams or else be forever doomed to a cycle of guilt and resentment. Eugene ONeills autobiographical masterwork exposes the lies we tell, the deceptions we craft, and the undercurrent of compassion that, if uncovered, can redeem us in the end. This Pulitzer Prize-winning American treasure restores the drama to literature and the theater to art (New York Times).

Grail, Goddesses, Circles, and the Sacred Feminine with Jean Shinoda Bolen

Sponsored by CIIS Public Programs & Performances - Click here to see any other events from this sponsor.

Saturday, March 31, 2012

San Francisco, CA - Presented by CIIS Public Programs & Performances

The grail and goddesses are archetypes, symbols with depth and meaning. In this workshop, Jean Shinoda Bolen will bring us into the legendary, mythic, and spiritual realm of the sacred feminine. Cut off from sources of meaning, without a connection to the feminine principle, the Tao or the Self, the inner landscape of men and women becomes a wasteland. The wounded Fisher King, the abduction of Persephone, and Siddhartha's quest are metaphors for depression and alienation and the loss of creativity, spontaneity, and love. This workshop will provide opportunities to be in touch with inner sources of wisdom and compassionate action, and encourage the formation of circles that can nourish and support who we are and what we are here for-as spiritual beings on a human path.

Jean Shinoda Bolen, MD, is a psychiatrist, Jungian analyst, and an internationally known author and speaker.
